Meet Thomas Whitener
Thomas Whitener is the Democratic Candidate for Kalamazoo County Treasurer.
Public service runs in Thomas’s family. His Grandfather was a Democratic US House of Representatives member in North Carolina for many years, and a Naval Officer before that. His family is full of teachers and service members, professors, and community leaders, a tradition that he is proud to be continuing.
Thomas was born in North Carolina, where he graduated from the prestigious North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Afterward, Thomas went on to the honors program at the University of Pittsburgh, studying Mathematics and Theater before transferring the Savannah College of Art and Design to focus on Game Design, earning his BFA in Interactive Design and Game Development.
After college, Thomas moved back to North Carolina, where he worked as an officer in the TSA, married his high-school best friend, and began his career as a Game Designer.
Later, Thomas and Meg moved to Italy, where she had been offered a Ph.D. fellowship working in Wine Biotechnology. After three years, her program almost complete, Thomas found a position as a Systems and Balance Designer right here in Portage, MI. He went on to become a Realtor, helping people in the area find their new homes.
Years later, Thomas and Dr. Meg have set down roots here in Michigan. With all the challenges facing everyday Michiganders like themselves, Thomas wants to use the skills and critical capabilities he’s developed to help. He intends to turn his well-trained eye to the Treasurer’s office and bring back transparency, accountability, and equity.
We hope you’ll join us.
